Why You Should Engrave Your Halter or Lead
Engraving a custom halter or lead for your horse offers practical and personal benefits. It provides a permanent way to identify your horse, making them easier to spot in a crowd or at events. Engraving also helps prevent mix-ups at boarding stables, shows, or during travel.
Beyond functionality, engraving adds a personal touch to your gear, reflecting your style or your horse’s personality. Custom engravings also serve as lasting keepsakes, displaying your bond with your horse.
Care Tips for Perri’s Leather Horse Halters
Taking care of leather horse halters keeps them functional and looking great for a long time. A little attention goes a long way toward preserving both durability and comfort.
- Clean Often: Wipe off dirt and sweat with a damp cloth after use. Use a leather-safe cleaner like Perri’s Potion for stubborn grime or buildup. A clean halter lasts longer and looks better.
- Condition Regularly: Apply Perri’s Potion every few weeks to keep the leather soft and pliable. Areas that flex—like straps and buckles—need it the most. This prevents cracking and helps the halter stay comfortable for the horse. Note: When cleaning leather, be careful not to get cleaning products on the engraved plate. Some products can damage the plate.
- Handle Moisture Carefully: Let the halter air dry in a cool, shady spot if it gets wet. Avoid drying it with heat or leaving it in direct sunlight. These can damage the leather, causing it to stiffen or crack.
- Store Properly: Keep the halter in a dry, clean place. Hanging it helps maintain its shape. Avoid damp areas to prevent mildew, which can weaken the leather over time.
- Inspect Before Use: Check for wear, like frayed stitching or stretched holes. Look at the hardware, too—rusted buckles can be a safety hazard. Replace damaged parts or repair them before they get worse.
- Skip the Harsh Stuff: Stick to cleaners made for leather. Household products or detergents strip the oils out of the material, making it brittle.
- Polish for Special Occasions: Use leather polish or balm if you want a nice shine for events or shows. This also helps maintain the leather’s smooth finish.
- Adjust for Winter Conditions: Cold weather can dry leather quickly. Condition more often during these months to keep the halter supple despite lower humidity.
These steps aren’t complicated, but they make a big difference. Taking care of your halter keeps it safe, comfortable, & ready to use whenever you need it.
